A prototype proposal
Program
The prototype seeks to challenge the traditional tent typology, as singular space, by transforming it to a toroidal space. While the space remains singular, it is bent on itself allowing a discrete division and a connection to a sheltered exterior space. The entryway is located at the central space of the structure.
Structure
The toroidal shape is rationalized into a series of radial ribs. The ribs would be deployed on the central axis of the torus, through circular movement, allowing a singular movement to complete the assembly of the structure.
- Form and Skin, Toroidal topology and pneumatic tectonics
- Delployable tectonic utilized to span structural membranes.
- Tent Deployment
- Plan & Section
- Radial Aggregations
- Linear and Self Organized aggregations

Very cool. Can’t wait to see this in person and what our production crew has to say when they see it.
Comment by sam October 1, 2009 @ 1:29 amInteresting concept, I’m curious what type of material is specified for the skin? Also do you have more stuctural details…are the ribs, skin, or is it a combination of skin & rib framing acting as the center support system?
Comment by Joseph Settipani October 7, 2009 @ 6:01 pmHey Joseph,
Comment by erikemartinez October 7, 2009 @ 8:35 pmThe skin is a deployable fabric membrane spanning the ribs. It would not be structural in terms of the tent, but it would be self supported. The main support for the tent would come from the ribs.
The 3d model sent to you guys is an idea for the deployable skin which we wish to migrate to a fabric folding technique. Fabric would allow the skin to fold and be lighter and cheaper. This older post:

includes videos of test we’ve made.
We will post more tectonic studies as the models are produced. Thank you for your interest.
I don’t see videos links for test 1 & 2.
